Call for Papers for a Panel Sponsored by The Friends of Numismatics

Small Change

Organized by Roberta Stewart (Dartmouth College) and Fae Amiro (Western University)

The Friends of Numismatics invites submissions for the 2026 Society for Classical Studies/ Archaeological Institute of America Annual Meeting, January 7-10, 2026, in San Francisco, CA for a panel session entitled “Small Change.”

We seek contributions that address the character and functions of small change (i.e. lower-value denominations) in Greek and Roman cultures broadly defined. Small change was minted by governments in both the center and periphery to fulfill the monetary needs of the community. These communities also used small change as a medium of mass communication to make statements of relevance to themselves, their neighbors, and larger governments.

Possible topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Small change as historical documents;
  • Small change as an expression of local identity (religious, political, ethnic);
  • The economic function of small change and its evidentiary value to elucidate trade;
  • Evidence for small change in ancient literature;
  • Audience targeting between the elite coinage and the everyday;
  • Small change in archaeological contexts (e.g. hoards, loose finds, foundation deposits, votive offerings).

Questions may be directed to Roberta Stewart (roberta.l.stewart@dartmouth.edu) or Fae Amiro (famiro@uwo.ca).

Please send abstracts for papers of no more than 20 minutes to Roberta Stewart (roberta.l.stewart@dartmouth.edu). Abstracts must follow the SCS guidelines for individual abstracts (see Guidelines for Authors of Abstracts). Deadline: February 14, 2025.

Please do not identify yourself in any way (name, institution, title) in the abstract itself.

Submissions will be reviewed anonymously, and decisions will be communicated to the authors of abstracts by early March, with enough time that those whose abstracts are not chosen can participate in the individual abstract submission process for the upcoming SCS meeting.
