The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES) at Binghamton University, State University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning fall 2016. We are seeking an archaeologist whose research and teaching center on the ancient Greek or Roman worlds, broadly defined, in any historical periods post-Bronze Age. Specialization is open, but should offer innovative perspectives on material and visual culture, an emerging focus of interdisciplinary study at Binghamton University. An active program of field research is desirable, as is an interest in enriching the experiences of undergraduates through study-abroad or participation in archaeological fieldwork. Teaching will include a wide range of courses in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as in the successful candidate's area of archaeological expertise. Proposed courses should complement current undergraduate culture and civilization offerings in Classics within CNES, and candidates should expect to contribute to language sequences in Latin or ancient Greek. The successful candidate may also contribute to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) interdisciplinary program.

This position has been approved for funding by the University administration as an affiliated position for Material and Visual Worlds, one of five Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (TAE) that Binghamton University has identified for growth. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of this TAE as an area of intensive research and teaching. The search committee will include members of the Material and Visual Worlds steering committee. For more information on TAE, please see http://binghamton.edu/academics/provost/tae2013.html.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, ca. twenty-page writing sample, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., syllabi, student evaluations, faculty observations, teaching philosophy), and three letters of recommendation electronically via Interview Exchange. Candidates must have a PhD or its equivalent in hand by the start of the appointment. All materials must be received by the deadline of November 16, 2015.

Preliminary interviews will be held at the joint meeting of the Society for Classical Studies and Archaeological Institute of America in San Francisco, January 6-9, 2016. The SCS Placement Service will not be arranging interviews for this position. Candidates will be contacted, and interviews will be scheduled directly by Binghamton's Search Committee. Alternative arrangements will be available via Skype for those not attending the meeting. Expect electronic acknowledgment of receipt. Please direct any questions to the Archaeology Search Committee Chair, John H. Starks, Jr., jstarks@binghamton.edu. Binghamton University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
