The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES) at Binghamton University, State University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning fall 2016. We are seeking an archaeologist whose research and teaching center on the ancient Greek or Roman worlds, broadly defined, in any historical periods post-Bronze Age. Specialization is open, but should offer innovative perspectives on material and visual culture, an emerging focus of interdisciplinary study at Binghamton University. An active program of field research is desirable, as is an interest in enriching the experiences of undergraduates through study-abroad or participation in archaeological fieldwork. Teaching will include a wide range of courses in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as in the successful candidate's area of archaeological expertise. Proposed courses should complement current undergraduate culture and civilization offerings in Classics within CNES, and candidates should expect to contribute to language sequences in Latin or ancient Greek. The successful candidate may also contribute to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) interdisciplinary program.
This position has been approved for funding by the University administration as an affiliated position for Material and Visual Worlds, one of five Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (TAE) that Binghamton University has identified for growth. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of this TAE as an area of intensive research and teaching.
