The Department of Classics at St. Olaf College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Classics at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in August 2018. We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated teacher/scholar who will welcome the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates and to promote the study of Classics across the campus and around the world. We are particularly interested in applicants who will contribute to the department’s commitment to increasing access and opportunities for populations that are currently under-represented in the area of Classics.

Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in Classics or a related field by September 1, 2018. Demonstrated teaching excellence and scholarly promise are required. Expertise in classical languages and literature is essential; we encourage those with additional interests (e.g, in medieval or modern languages and literature, linguistics, rhetoric, philosophy, religion, history, art history, women’s and gender studies, fine arts, mathematics, natural or social science, or material culture) to apply.

The normal teaching load is six courses per year. Teaching responsibilities include Latin and Greek language courses at all levels; classics courses taught in English (e.g., Greek and Roman Myth, Gender and Sexuality in the Ancient World, Golden Age of Greece, Golden Age of Rome); and, every three or four years, a January-term study abroad course (Classical Studies in Greece or Classical Studies in Italy). The successful candidate will be expected to teach periodically in The Great Conversation program, have academic advisees, serve on committees, and participate wholeheartedly not only in departmental activities (e.g., Eta Sigma Phi events) but also in the life of the college as a whole.

Applicants must submit materials online at https://stolaf.hiretouch.com/faculty-postings.

A complete application includes:

1. A cover letter (in which you should outline your qualifications, summarize your teaching and research interests, and briefly reflect on what you would bring to St. Olaf College)

2. A current curriculum vitae

3. Unofficial graduate transcripts

In addition, please provide the names and emails of three professional references who can speak to your abilities in teaching and scholarship (we ask only for references’ names and emails; after an initial round of screening, St. Olaf will solicit letters directly from the references).

If you have questions or need assistance with the application process, please send an email to

classics_tt2018@stolaf.edu or call 507-786-3356.

Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.
