Classical Studies & Medical Humanities: The Department of Philosophy & Classics at the University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for one Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in Classical Studies, with competence in Medical Humanities, to begin August 2018. Responsibilities include developing a strong research program, teaching courses at the undergraduate levels, participation in department activities, and service to the department, college, and university. The normal teaching load is 2/2. We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated teacher/scholar who will welcome the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates and to promote the study of Classical Studies and Medical Humanities across the campus and around the world. We are particularly interested in applicants who will contribute to the department’s commitment to increasing access and opportunities for populations that are currently under-represented in the areas of Classical Studies and medicine. Teaching responsibilities include Latin and Greek language courses at all levels; Classics courses taught in English (e.g., Greek and Roman Myth, Gender and Sexuality in the Ancient World, Intro to Greece, Intro to Rome, etc); and Medical Humanities courses (e.g., Intro to Medical Humanities, Medical Humanities Capstone Seminar, etc.). Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Classics or a related field by September 1, 2018. Required qualifications include: demonstrated teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, a record of outstanding scholarship, and demonstrated commitment to service. Candidates must have expertise in classical languages and literature, as well as teaching competence in some area of the medical humanities (to include the history of medicine, ancient medicine, narrative medicine, medicine and the arts, medicine and social justice, and related areas). Candidates who have additional interests (e.g, in general humanities, philosophy, religion, history, art history, women’s and gender studies, fine arts, mathematics, natural or social science, or material culture) are encouraged to apply. The Department of Philosophy and Classics offers three BA degrees (Classical Studies and Humanities, Medical Humanities, and Philosophy), and the MA in Philosophy.
