Monmouth College, a selective liberal arts college and member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, seeks a creative, innovative teacher/scholar for a full-time, tenure-track position in Classics, starting in August 2018. The position requires a Ph.D. in Classics or a closely related field and evidence of teaching excellence. While the candidate should be broadly trained, her/his particular area of expertise should be in the Roman world. Teaching responsibilities, within a three-course load per semester, may include Latin language courses at all undergraduate levels; classical Greek at all undergraduate levels, and perhaps Koine Greek at the introductory level; a range of courses in mythology, literature, history, and civilization, many of them of the instructor’s proposal and design; and courses in the College’s general education Integrated Studies curriculum. Independent studies for students completing capstone courses are sometimes taught as well beyond the three-course load. Monmouth’s Classics Department has long been vital and dynamic, and we would hope to hire a candidate with ideas for, and willingness to contribute to, a vibrant experience for our undergraduates. This includes, among other possibilities, planning and coordinating programming, revising the curriculum as necessary, and advising students toward satisfying professional outcomes.
