ACCESS TO THE PROGRAM SUBMISSION SYSTEM
To submit a proposal or individual abstract to the Program Committee for consideration for the 2025 Annual Meeting, you must be an SCS member in good standing for 2024 so that you can log in to the online submission system. When you log in, you should use the credentials you have created at the Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP). The large majority of members created an account at JHUP when they paid dues by credit card or consulted the online directory of members. Membership payments for 2024 are due by December 31, 2024. If you are paying dues, please allow AT LEAST A WEEK for your payment to be received and processed by Johns Hopkins. Absolutely NO extensions of the deadlines will be possible because of unpaid membership fees or because membership applications were not submitted with sufficient time for processing before the deadline. Reminder: You must use the username and password you have established with the Johns Hopkins University Press for the program submission system. If you have created a different username or password on classicalstudies.org, those credentials will not give you access to the submission system.
ELIGIBILITY TO APPEAR ON SCS PROGRAM
All participants in panels, seminars, workshops and paper sessions at the Annual Meeting are required to be SCS members in good standing. Organizers of panels, seminars, and workshops must verify participants’ membership status before the proposal is submitted to the Program Committee. If you are not sure whether you have paid your SCS dues for the current year, contact the customer service staff at the Johns Hopkins University Press at jrnlcirc@press.jhu.edu, 800-548-1784 (US and Canada only), or 410-516-6987 (all others).
A waiver of the membership requirement may be requested from the Program Committee by the organizer of an at-large or committee panel, workshop, seminar, roundtable discussion session, or organizer-refereed or affiliated group panel at the time the session is submitted for review to the program committee, if the participant in question is a scholar in a field not ordinarily associated with classical studies or is a resident of a country outside North America and only a temporary visitor to North America. (Note: At least one organizer of a roundtable discussion session should be a member.) A waiver of SCS membership for participation in the Annual Meeting will be granted only once for any given individual. By action of the SCS Board of Directors, such waivers may not be granted to a scholar who is submitting an individual abstract to the Program Committee. Requests for waivers should be sent directly to the SCS Executive Director (xd@classicalstudies.org).
ANNUAL MEETING REGISTRATION
All participants in sessions on the program, including nonmembers who have received a waiver of the membership requirement, must register for the Annual Meeting and pay the applicable fees.
SINGLE APPEARANCE POLICY
The Program Committee seeks to encourage wide participation among SCS members at the Annual Meeting. The Committee therefore reminds all participants of its long-standing policy of limiting members to one appearance on the Annual Meeting Program. An appearance includes participation as a presenter in a panel, seminar or workshop, an affiliated group session, an organizer-refereed panel, a session sponsored by an SCS committee, or a regular SCS paper session. Panel organizers should ensure that participants in their proposed sessions are not appearing elsewhere at the Annual Meeting. The only exception to this policy is that individuals who are members of both the AIA and the SCS may appear in both a Joint Session and an SCS program unit. Serving as either the presider of an annual meeting panel or the leader of a roundtable discussion group is not treated as an appearance on the SCS program.
SINGLE SUBMISSION POLICY
In accordance with the single appearance policy above, members whose papers are submitted to the Program Committee as part of any panel, workshop, or seminar proposal or report cannot also submit an individual abstract. Violations of the multiple submissions rule may result in the invalidation of BOTH submissions.
However, if a member submits a paper in response to a call for abstracts from an organizer-refereed panel, affiliated group, or SCS committee, and that paper is not accepted by the organizer(s), the member can subsequently submit an individual abstract or be part of a panel proposal to be reviewed by the Program Committee.
