The Department of Classics at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Greek Literature and the Classical Tradition, to begin as early as August 18, 2015. This is a tenure-line position with a 2:2 teaching load. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in Classics or an allied field by the start date of the appointment. We are seeking a scholar whose research and teaching in Greek epic or drama will sustain our program’s strength in Greek literature and culture. We are particularly interested in hiring faculty members who can contribute to the climate of diversity in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including a diversity of scholarly approaches, and four key campus-wide strategic initiatives: (1) Sustaining the Planet, Powering the World; (2) Promoting Well-Being, Finding Cures; (3) Building Communities, Expanding Opportunities; and (4) Harnessing Information, Multiplying Knowledge. The successful candidate will hold an appointment in the Department of Classics and will teach across the Classics curriculum, including seminars in ancient Greek at the graduate level. Since epic and drama are both performed genres in the ancient world and are canonical texts in the secondary curriculum, the incumbent will be expected to help lead the department in outreach to Kansas and the wider community. The Classics Department maintains an excellent undergraduate program and one of the top M.A. programs in the country, and enjoys close collaborative relationships with the University of Kansas departments of Theater and Film; Humanities and Western Civilization; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; History; History of Art; Religious Studies; Philosophy; and Jewish Studies.

Qualifications: For all ranks: Ph.D. (or ABD status) in Classics or an allied discipline expected by the start date of the appointment; demonstrated ability to teach ancient Greek at all levels; evidence of emerging or established research program in field of expertise; research focus on Greek epic or drama; and evidence of engagement with the Classical tradition. Candidate must meet University criteria for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor if hiring within these ranks.
