The Department of Classical & Modern Languages in the School of Arts & Letters at Truman State University is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Classics with specialization in Latin to start August 2015, pending funding and final approval.

Required Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in Classics or Latin; ABD will be considered with Ph.D. completion expected by August 10, 2015.

Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities include Latin language classes at all undergraduate levels as well as courses in Roman civilization and possibly in Roman history. Scholarly activity and output appropriate to the rank are expected consistent with Truman’s teacher-scholar model. Additional duties include advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences, and service to the university.

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Latin
  • Evidence of ability to offer courses in Roman civilization
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written and interpersonal)
  • Enthusiastic commitment to the liberal arts and sciences as a teacher-scholar, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment as the highest priority
  • Willingness to participate in the mentoring of students in high impact experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, internships, study abroad, cultural activities, and the Classics honorary society

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and education. The benefits package includes life, health and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses. Promotion and awarding of tenure is based on success as a teacher-scholar; a departmental policy on promotion and tenure is available upon request.

Program: The Classics program at Truman has 4 full-time faculty positions and provides undergraduate courses from elementary to advanced levels in Greek and Latin, as well as courses in Greek and Roman literature in translation, Greek and Roman civilization, women and gender in the ancient world, and other topics related to classical antiquity. Truman offers the B.A. degree in Classics along with minors in Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies. Amtrak operates the Southwest Chief on daily schedules from Kirksville to Chicago, Kansas City, and points southwest to Los Angeles. A.T.
