Position Summary:

Gettysburg College invites applications for a two-year visiting faculty position in Classics at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor ( beginning August 2016. 


The successful candidate should have a commitment to teaching in the liberal arts tradition and show clear potential for scholarly engagement. We seek a classicist with broad intellectual interests who 1) has expertise in one or more of the following areas: comparative literature, performance, digital humanities, gender studies, classical reception; 2) will offer innovative courses in the classical humanities to a broad audience and make interdisciplinary contributions to the curriculum; 3) can teach Greek and Latin literature and language courses; and 4) can contribute to our FY Seminar program. The teaching load is 3/3 and also includes advising and mentoring students’ capstones and research projects. PhD in Classics or degree to be conferred before the beginning of the fall 2016 semester.

A cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a statement of teaching philosophy must be submitted.  The statement of teaching philosophy must include the candidate’s experience, ability to design and assess learning outcomes, and some brief descriptions of potential course offerings.  In addition, applicants should submit the names and email addresses of three professional references.  After the search committee’s preliminary selection of candidates, professional references will be contacted by Gettysburg College via email to submit letters of recommendation electronically.  At least one individual should be able to speak to the candidate’s teaching effectiveness.
