Classical Greek Instructor for Summer Rapid Reading Course Online May 24 –July 14, 2016

There is an opening for a Classical Greek teacher this summer to teach in the Erasmus Academy Summer Language Program. The eight-week online course is taught from May 24 to July 14, 2016. Although the Erasmus Academy conducts a marketing campaign in North America throughout the year, each Instructor is encouraged to be entrepreneurial in exploring ways to publicize the courses. Therefore, we are looking for candidates who are willing to work in a collaborative fashion in expanding the enrollment of the summer program.

This course is designed for graduate students preparing to pass a language proficiency exam for master and doctoral programs, for college students or other adults desiring to read or conduct research in the language, or others with a personal interest in Attic Greek and its literature. It assumes no prior knowledge of the language. The courses are taught in “real time” online, via the Internet. That is, students log on at specific times and interact directly with the Instructor and the other classmates. Students enrolling in these courses must have 30 hours per week available for study: 6 hrs. of in-class instruction and 24 hrs. of outside preparation. The classes meet twice a week: Tues/Thurs 6:15-9:15 pm Eastern Time. The course covers a year of college language instruction in eight weeks. As an online course, the instructor can teach the course from an office or from home.

We are looking for a graduate student or college teacher who has already taught first year Greek as a rapid reading course with competence. The goal of this course is to bring students from no experience in the language to being able to read and translate Greek texts on an intermediate level. By the end of the 8-week summer course, students would be prepared to enroll in a second year college course in Attic Greek. The applicant does not need to have taught a course online before.

Note: The Erasmus Academy strongly encourages women and minorities to apply.

The compensation is entirely dependent on the number of students enrolled in the course you are teaching. The student fee for the 8-week course in the summer of 2016 is $950. The compensation the Instructor receives is $665 for each student enrolled (i.e. 70% of the tuition paid). The successful candidate will be obliged to teach the course with a minimum of four students. Average class enrollment over the past 10 years has been between 5 and 8 students. We anticipate making the appointment by January 15, 2016.
