Cornell College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college, invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach during the 2016-17 academic year. We anticipate hiring instructors to teach five courses in Roman History, Classical Mythology, and Beginning Latin I and II (2 sections). Cornell College is a selective liberal arts college distinguished by its One Course At A Time calendar, under which faculty teach, and students take, one course at a time in month-long terms. Courses and term dates are:

255. Roman History (September 5 – September 28, 2016)

This is an introductory course in Roman history that will cover major social, economic, and political developments from the founding of Rome to the reign of Constantine with an emphasis on Rome's rise to power beginning with the Punic Wars to the reign of Constantine, who transferred the capital of the empire to Constantinople. Topics to be discussed include the civil wars, the creation of empire, Rome's place in the ancient Mediterranean world, Roman religion and Christianity.

216. Classical Mythology (October 3 – October 26, 2016)

Development of the myth, legend, and folklore of the ancient world, especially their place in Ancient Greek and Roman culture, and their survival in the modern world.

101-102. Beginning Latin I (November 28 – December 21, 2016)

Beginning Latin II (March 20 – April 12, 2017) and Beginning Latin II (April 17 – May 10, 2017)

Introduction to the language of ancient Rome, its empire, the middle ages, and the early modern world. Students will learn the essentials of grammar, vocabulary, and Roman history and culture through reading, speaking, and writing Latin; increase English vocabulary through Latin derivatives; and read selections from Latin writers from different eras.

We are especially interested in advanced graduate students looking to expand their teaching portfolios by teaching at a liberal arts college. Candidates should possess or be in the process of completing a PhD in Classical Studies or a related field; candidates with an MA may be considered.
