History of Rome and the Ancient Mediterranean World

The University of Michigan’s Department of History seeks to fill a tenure-track position in the history of ancient Rome and the Mediterranean World at the rank of assistant or early associate professor, with the appointment to begin on September 1, 2017. We seek a historian whose research and teaching explores connections between ancient Rome and the cultures and polities of the Mediterranean and adjacent regions as well as the relationship of Rome to larger issues of world history. The Department of History welcomes applications from candidates in a wide variety of thematic and methodological specialties. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research and teaching could contribute to one of our current strengths in the study of gender and sexuality, environmental history, and imperial and colonial encounters, or who could add to developing fields such as digital humanities or public history. Regardless of specialties, we seek a colleague who can contribute to the Department’s traditions of intellectual distinction, academic excellence, and innovative pedagogy.

To ensure full consideration, application materials must be received by October 15, 2016. All applicants should send: a letter of interest, a C.V., a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching excellence, and any other supporting materials you may wish to include. In addition, three letters of recommendation should be sent under separate cover. Direct all materials to Prof. Kathleen Canning, Chair, History Department, 1029 Tisch Hall, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, 48109-1003, or by email to shelanz@umich.edu. Women and minority scholars are encouraged to apply, and the university is supportive of the needs of dual-career couples. The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Teaching duties for faculty members in the History Department are normally two courses per semester.
