Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a full-time joint position in the Department of Classics and the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the rank of assistant (tenure-track) or associate (tenured) professor, with a specialty in Classical Archaeology. The successful candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field in hand by July 1, 2017 and must show strong promise of scholarly achievement and the ability to make significant contributions to the graduate and undergraduate programs of both of these vibrant and growing departments. Previous or current participation in field archaeology is required. Candidates must be prepared to teach courses at all undergraduate levels and graduate seminars in the material culture, art, or architecture of the ancient Mediterranean world, and language courses in either Ancient Greek or Latin at the undergraduate level. Candidates applying at the associate professor level should have an established publication record and at least five years of teaching experience at the university level. Duties will include teaching of two courses per semester, advising of students, research and writing for publication, departmental governance, and university service. Teaching and service duties will be evenly divided between the two departments. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a writing sample, course evaluations or other evidence of teaching excellence, and three letters of recommendation by October 17, 2016.
