The Department of Classics at Williams College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Classics beginning July 1, 2017. We seek a specialist in the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world who balances a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching across all of classical studies with deep preparation and scholarly interest in such areas as archaeology, epigraphy, ancient medicine, religion, topography, paleography, and infrastructure. Candidates should be prepared to teach Latin and Greek at all levels in addition to courses in their specialty, and should provide evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Williams College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. We encourage applications from members of historically under-represented groups as well as individuals who have experience with diverse student populations. Applicants are welcome in their cover letter to note any specific knowledge, skills, and abilities related to building a diverse educational environment. The successful applicant is expected to have the PhD in hand by September 1, 2017. Appointment is normally made at the beginning assistant professor level, but a more senior appointment is possible under special circumstances.

The deadline for receipt of applications is November 4, 2016. Applicants should submit a letter of application that explains their interest in and qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation via Interfolio. Please do not send writing samples at this point. All offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a background check.
