The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce a search for a Latinist to fill the position of Basil L. Gildersleeve Professorship of Classics. We are seeking to maintain and enhance the academic excellence of the Classics Department by the appointment of a scholar with internationally recognized expertise. Area of specialization within Roman studies is open: any field of ancient Latin literature or Roman culture except archaeology will be considered. In addition to research the new colleague will teach graduate students and undergraduates at all levels, will share in the leadership of the Department, and will contribute to the Department's collaborations within the larger academic community of the University. The appointment will be made at the level of Full Professor, but applicants now at the rank of Associate Professor with exceptional records of scholarship and teaching will be considered.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2016. The position will remain open until filled. The anticipated appointment start date will be July 25, 2017.
