The Onassis Foundation USA is committed to the promotion of Hellenic culture. By cooperating with educational and cultural institutions in Greece and throughout the Americas, the Onassis Foundation USA promotes knowledge and cultural relations. The mission of the Onassis Foundation USA is realized through two major initiatives. The Onassis Cultural Center New York presents art and archaeological exhibitions and a season of major cultural and artistic events focused primarily on the humanities and science. The academic program, the University Seminars Program, organizes and sponsors the visits of eminent scholars from all over the world to universities and other educational and cultural institutions across the United States, Canada, Central America, and South America for courses and mini-courses on topics related to Hellenic civilization.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Educational Programs/Assistant Executive Director develops and manages all aspects of the University Seminars Program and other educational initiatives. The position will play a key role in (1) reconfiguring the Foundation’s academic programs to address contemporary challenges facing the humanities, (2) supporting innovative teaching and research in the Classics, and (3) exploring ways in which the Classics can be incorporated in the curricula of professional schools and enrich teaching in the natural sciences. Responsibilities include monitoring academic programs and courses at American universities that relate to Ancient, Byzantine and/or Modern Greek culture; collecting and reviewing proposals from universities for sponsorship of projects and courses; ensuring that approved projects are executed in accordance with guidelines and parameters set by the Foundation Board and within the approved budget; and managing relations between visiting scholars and host institutions. The Director/Associate Executive Director will organize special events, international conferences, and workshops; collaborate with the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (the parent foundation) and the Onassis Cultural Center Athens on various initiatives; and assist the Executive Director with administrative functions.

A Ph.D. in the Classics (Ancient Greek, Byzantine, or Modern Greek culture, history or literature) is required, though candidates with a related master’s degree and substantial experience will be considered. Additional requirements include experience in academic administration, outstanding English speaking and writing skills, and a good command of the Greek language. An ideal candidate will possess teaching and/or program development experience and strong budget management, computer, and administrative skills.
