Assistant Professor of Roman History

The Department of History at the University of Connecticut invite applications for a tenure-track appointment in the History of Classical Rome at the assistant professor level beginning August 23, 2017. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in Ancient History, together with advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in his/her area of interest. Development of a strong, ongoing research trajectory through high quality publications, and engagement in service and outreach activities will also be expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship, high quality publications, impact as measured through citations, and national recognition such as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in History or a related field, with a specialization in the history of Classical Rome, by the appointment start date. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable. Applicants must have experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching Classical Greek and Roman History, and be able to teach advanced Latin texts. Applicants must show the potential to build a successful research record, and be able through their activities to contribute to the History Department’s scholarly community and commitment to diversity in learning.

Preferred Qualifications

Research and/or teaching interests in the Classical Tradition; Political Thought and Institutions, or Empire Studies.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 2017. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
