Title: Thomas F. Cooper Post-Doctoral Fellow in Classics

Job Summary:

The Classics Department at Oberlin College is pleased to announce a new two-year post-doctoral position funded by a generous donation from Oberlin alumnus Thomas Cooper. The Department invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position as a Thomas F. Cooper Postdoctoral Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years beginning first semester of 2017-18 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Department of Classics has four full-time faculty and teaches a wide range of courses in Classical Civilization, including Greek and Roman literature, ancient history, archaeology, and culture, as well as four years each of Latin and Greek. Responsibilities:

The post-doctoral fellow will teach three courses per year (2-1 or 1-2) in the general area of classical studies, and should be prepared to teach Latin and Greek language and literature at all levels, in addition to broader in-translation courses in the candidate’s area of specialty. The Department will seek to hire a candidate who brings expertise in an area of Classical literature, history, or culture that complements the current strengths of our department. Possible areas of interest include: ancient philosophy, the Hellenistic world, Roman Republican literature, Greek or Roman material culture, race and ethnicity in antiquity, ancient political theory, or late antiquity; this list should not be taken as exhaustive. We will also give some preference to candidates able to teach an introductory course in either Greek or Roman history.

Qualifications:

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree awarded no earlier than 2014 but in hand by 1 July 2017. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

Compensation:

Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
