Assistant Teaching Professor in Classical Civilizations

The Department of Classics at Florida State University has been authorized to make an appointment in the area of Classical Civilizations, with a focus on undergraduate teaching and pedagogy, to begin in August 2018. The position will be a full-time Specialized Teaching Faculty I member (non-tenure track), with full benefits; starting salary is $48,000.

We seek a talented and engaged teacher who will play a major role in teaching the Department’s Liberal Studies offerings; keeping existing courses current and proposing new ones; and assist with training and supervising the graduate instructors of record teaching those courses. Duties include a teaching load of 4 courses in each Fall and Spring term, and 2 in Summer, with course reductions possible for supervisory duties. There are opportunities to teach in the various specialized programs offered by the University, including the Honors Program and Living Learning Communities, in addition to the Liberal Studies for the 21st Century initiative.

The initial appointment is for one year but with the opportunity for renewal pending satisfactory performance. While the position is non-tenure earning, there are opportunities for paid Professional Development leaves and promotion to higher levels with multi-year contracts. The Ph.D. must be in hand by July 1, 2018.

  • sample syllabi for three courses, one of which should be for a course in Comparative Mythology (to meet the Diversity Requirement); one for a course that fulfills the University’s Oral Communication Competency Requirement; and the third for an undergraduate course of the applicant’s choosing that would appeal to non-majors
  • writing sample (a dissertation chapter or an article), no more than 25 pages
