The Department of Classics at Dartmouth College invites applications for a newly-established position of Language Program Director. The person hired to fill this position will teach four courses per year in introductory Latin and ancient Greek. In addition, the Language Program Director will:
• coordinate the Department’s introductory-level language offerings (12-15 course sections per academic year) and work closely with the tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty staffing such courses in order to maintain the highest possible standards of teaching and learning and to ensure consistency in content, assessment, and pedagogical approaches;
• oversee student placement as well as recruitment and retention initiatives;
• provide information on best practices in language pedagogy;
• conceive and coordinate co-curricular events to extend the teaching and learning of Classics outside the classroom.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Classics or a closely related field (or be on schedule to complete their PhD prior to 1 September 2018) and should be committed to a career track that strongly emphasizes language pedagogy at the introductory level. Promising candidates will have thorough training in both ancient Greek and Latin, extensive experience and demonstrated expertise in teaching Greek and Latin, a deep familiarity with established and emerging approaches to language pedagogy, and a strong interest in pedagogical innovation. Excellent collaborative work skills are essential as the person holding this position must be an effective team leader, able to work productively with all members of the department and with other Language Program Directors at Dartmouth.
The appointment will be at the rank of Senior Lecturer (non-tenure track) with a start date of 1 September 2018. The successful candidate will receive an initial four-year appointment, with renewals contingent on performance.
