The Classics Department of Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant or associate professor level, beginning 1 July 2019. The Department welcomes candidates in any field related to Greco-Roman antiquity who have demonstrated enthusiasm for and expertise in Latin instruction. A genuine interest in teaching across disciplinary lines will be prized (courses that would contribute to such programs as Africana studies, digital studies, environmental studies, gender and sexuality studies, or health and human values, for example, would be welcome), as will interest and experience in inclusive pedagogy. The annual teaching assignment will normally consist of 2 or 3 courses in Latin at various levels and 2 or 3 other courses, including contributing to the department's commitment to our writing or humanities programs.

We expect the successful applicant to have the PhD in hand by 1 August 2019. Davidson normally makes appointments at the beginning assistant professor level, but a more senior appointment is possible.

All interested applicants should apply online at http://employment.davidson.edu (search for the position under Faculty, then Classics). You will be asked to upload:

  • a cover letter
  • a curriculum vitae
  • unofficial graduate transcripts (official ones will be required before hire)
  • a statement of teaching interests and philosophy
  • a description of past and current research
  • an explanation of how the candidate's teaching, research, and/or service might contribute to Davidson's institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The application form will also request the names and email addresses for three references, from whom letters of recommendation will be solicited by our system. For further information, email the chair of the department, Peter Krentz, at pekrentz@davidson.edu.
