The Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego seeks to make a full-time, tenure track appointment of an Assistant Professor of Mediterranean Studies, with emphasis on Latin literature and culture. The candidate must have a PhD degree in Classics or related fields by time of appointment. The successful candidate will be both highly competent in the Latin language and will be able to demonstrate interest in and commitment to the comparativist study of the Roman Empire, and of relations among different regions and cultures across Africa, Europe, and Asia. We welcome applications from candidates specializing in either classical or late antiquity. Competence in another ancient language in addition to Latin, e.g. Syriac, Hebrew, Aramaic, an Anatolian language, Egyptian, Sanskrit or classical Chinese, is advantageous but is not required.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach Latin language courses at all levels – beginning, intermediate, and advanced – as well as more general thematic courses in which texts will be read in translation. The position is situated not in a traditional classics department, but in a multilingual Literature Department with faculty and students engaged in literary, comparatist, historical, and cultural studies. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary study of Mediterranean languages and cultures across the university. The successful applicant will also be affiliated with the Program in Classical Studies, which includes faculty from Literature, History, Philosophy, Visual Arts and Theater and Dance, and with the Center for Hellenic Studies. Salary and level of appointment are based on qualifications and UC pay scale. Proof of authorization to work in the U. S. will be required prior to employment (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1985).
