The Department of History & Classics invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Roman Material Culture with a starting date of July 1, 2020.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Classical or Mediterranean Archaeology or a related discipline, with a primary focus on the Material Culture of the Roman world, in any period between the Early Iron Age and Late Antiquity. ABD applicants with a strong expectation of completing the PhD before July 1, 2020, will also be considered.
Applicants must demonstrate outstanding potential for teaching and research. Responsibilities for the position will include maintaining an active research program, teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs, and graduate student supervision. The ability to teach broadly in Classics is a requirement for the position. Fieldwork experience is required, and applicants should have the potential to organize and direct an archaeological field school. Applicants working in any part of the Roman world are welcome to apply. Familiarity with current developments in archaeological theory and practice and proficiency in languages, ancient and modern, as relevant to the applicant's research area are expected. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong interdisciplinary outlook who can contribute to our new undergraduate Certificate in Archaeology (offered jointly with the Department of Anthropology).
The Department of History and Classics has a long record of over fifty years of excellence in archaeological research. In recent decades, faculty and students from the department have conducted site excavations in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia.
