The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s History and Literature Faculties invite applications for an appointment at the rank of Lecturer 1 in Ancient and Medieval Studies (AMS) with a focus on the history, literature, and language of Ancient Greece, beginning July 1, 2020 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

We seek a dynamic, dedicated teacher-scholar who complements research and teaching excellence in AMS, an interdisciplinary undergraduate program currently drawing students and faculty from across the core disciplines of History, Literature, Architecture, Music, and Philosophy. Promising candidates will have a PhD by the start of employment in a Literature field such as classics, drama, literature, or a History field such as ancient history, Mediterranean Studies, Byzantine Studies; thorough training in Latin and ancient Greek; and at least one year of in teaching at the university level.

Duties will include teaching with a course load of five classes per academic year (three or two classes each semester), plus administrative responsibilities for the AMS program. The initial teaching assignment will include an historical survey of ancient Greece and an upper-level Greek history subject, and three subjects to be divided among Greek literature, drama, and language, in consultation with the Literature section. The administrative role includes organization and teaching of a bi-yearly 10-day study abroad program in Greece.

Initial appointment will be for three years with a review conducted in year two. If approved for renewal, Lecturer 1 will be reappointed for two more years. Indefinite renewals based on mutual agreement may be possible.
