Blegen Research Fellowship in Greek and Roman Studies

The Vassar College Department of Greek and Roman Studies invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 2020-2021.

Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Individuals from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Fellowship is intended for a scholar who needs a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major research project. The Fellowship is tenable for one year. Area of specialty is open, though we are especially interested in scholars working on aspects of the ancient world not normally covered by our faculty. Applicants should have at least one year of full-time teaching experience and preferably more. Advanced assistant professors and tenured scholars are especially encouraged to apply.

In 2020-2021 the Fellow will teach two courses. One is a seminar at the advanced level related to the Fellow's research interests. The other is an advanced Latin course on Virgil. Preference is given to candidates who propose a seminar on a subject not regularly taught in our curriculum and which has the potential for being cross-listed with other departments or multidisciplinary programs

The Fellowship carries a salary appropriate to the Fellow's experience, plus benefits, and includes the use, without cost, of a furnished three-bedroom apartment (including utilities).

All candidates must apply online at employment.vassar.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=52997.

Candidates should submit (1) a CV; (2) a brief statement describing the content and current status of your proposed research project; (3) one or two suggestions for the seminar mentioned above (include title and brief course description); (4) a brief representative sample of scholarly work; (4) two letters of reference; and (5) a diversity statement. Review of applications will begin on March 20, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.

Candidates who have applied for the department's other open positions may submit the same materials, where applicable, for the Blegen Fellowship.

Questions may be directed to J. Bert Lott, Chair of Greek and Roman Studies, at jolott@vassar.edu.
