The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin in the 2020-21 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years. The course load is 2-2. Applicants must be able to contribute to a number of areas in the Classical Studies curriculum, including Greek and Latin language and literature courses at all levels and other courses in literature, culture, history, and reception studies designed for broader audiences. Research specialty is open, but the ideal candidate will contribute, in both research and teaching, to our ongoing efforts to make the field of classical studies more diverse and inclusive. Ph.D. must be in hand by July 2020, and evidence of excellent teaching is required.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, CV, a writing sample (such as one chapter or article), and the contact information of three individuals who will provide letters of recommendation. Recommenders will be contacted by the University with instructions on how to submit letters. If the writing sample is part of a dissertation or other major project, please include an abstract explaining the sample’s relationship to the larger work. The review of applications will begin March 30, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.
