The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position as Lecturer in Classics (Latin and Greek Languages) beginning August 30, 2021. Teaching responsibilities (3/3) include undergraduate courses in Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilization and graduate courses e.g. in Greek and Latin prose composition (as needed). Other responsibilities: coordinate and supervise graduate and adjunct instructors in beginning and intermediate Greek and Latin courses; advise on student placement in those courses; coordinate the College in Schools programs in Latin and Greek (a joint university/high school credit option at selected regional high schools); offer professional development for College in the Schools high school teachers and CNES graduate instructors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Classics or a related field.
  • Ph.D.-level proficiency in classical Latin and Greek.
  • Successful performance as a Greek and Latin language instructor, with a minimum of one year teaching experience as sole/lead instructor (includes high school teaching)
  • Demonstration of commitment in undergraduate teaching, and substantial record of accomplishment in program development or administration and coordination.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Consistent record of positive teaching evaluations from students, graduate instructors, peers, supervisors, faculty, and administrative staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in language teaching and pedagogy
  • Demonstrated interest in online instruction techniques
  • Ability to teach large introductory civilization classes
  • Experience with outreach programs (especially involving K12)
  • Experience with initiatives centered on diversity and inclusion in classics teaching
  • Coordination experience or experience mentoring new teachers
  • Three years experience or more as sole/lead instructor in Greek, Latin and Classical Civilization
