Professor-in-Charge, one-year appointment each for AY 2026-2027, AY 2027-2028, August through May; Rome, Italy.
Candidates must be eager to teach undergraduates in a uniquely immersive, intensive, and collaborative environment that combines traditional classroom teaching with on-site instruction at museums and archaeological sites. They should have strong knowledge of ancient Rome and Greek and Roman Italy, and should demonstrate an enthusiastic capacity for leading faculty colleagues in designing and implementing the program’s team-taught core course, “The Ancient City,” which combines archaeology, history, topography, literature, and epigraphy. They should also be ready to collaborate with Rome-based study-abroad professionals in implementing the Center’s academic and co-curricular program.
The ability and eagerness to teach a course in either intermediate or advanced-level Greek or Latin is highly desirable, as is competence in spoken Italian or a commitment to acquiring such competence before undertaking the position in Rome. Because leading excursions for “The Ancient City” course is an essential function of this position, candidates must be able to traverse various types of terrain, including steep slopes and uneven ground, for significant distances, in addition to safely leading students through public transportation systems.
The Intercollegiate Center does not provide H-1B or other immigration case sponsorship. Those hired must already be legally able to work for an American organization.
Letters detailing specific qualifications, a curriculum vitae, and (separately) two letters of recommendation, one of which speaks specifically to the candidate’s experience in and/or commitment to collaboration and undergraduate teaching, are to be sent electronically ONLY to: Jessica Short, Administrative and Recruiting Assistant, Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome; assist@TheCentroRome.org.
Candidates should submit all application materials to arrive on or before November 1. Virtual interviews will be scheduled for December or January. The Intercollegiate Center is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia.
