Awards to Be Presented at Upcoming Annual Meeting

The Society for Classical Studies will present the following awards at the Plenary Session of its 147th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Click on the link in or to the right of each winner’s name to read the award citations. Citations for the Precollegiate Teaching Award will follow shortly.

President’s Award (honors an individual, group, or organization outside of the Classics profession that has made significant contributions to advancing public appreciation and awareness of Classical antiquity).

NEH Public Scholar Grants

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) invites applications for the 2016 round of the Public Scholar Program, which is intended to support well-researched books in the humanities that have been conceived and written to reach a broad readership. Books supported through the Public Scholar Program might present a narrative history, tell the stories of important individuals, analyze significant texts, provide a synthesis of ideas, revive interest in a neglected subject, or examine the latest thinking on a topic.

In Memoriam: Rolly J. Phillips

Rolly J.Phillips died unexpectedly 15 November 2015 in Salt Lake City, UT. She studied Classics at Bryn Mawr College, from which she graduated summa cum laude in 1965. A Fulbright Scholar in Classics at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, England, from 1965 to 1967, she received her Ph.D. in Classics from Harvard University in 1971. Rolly then had a long career teaching Latin and Greek. She held positions at Yale University, at Barnard College, and, from 1981 to 2009, at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City. She is survived by two sisters and three brothers.

Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students to apply for the 2016 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation, each fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers for up to $3500 in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees.

Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship in European Studies

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students to apply for its 2016 Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships. Each fellowship includes a $4,000 stipend, travel support for attending and presenting at the International Conference of Europeanists, and the opportunity to publish in Perspectives on Europe, a semi-annual journal of the Council for European Studies.

Jan Wojcik Memorial Prize for Graduate Students

Kristeller-Popkin Travel Fellowships

Sponsored by the Journal of the History of Philosophy, these fellowships are in recognition of the scholarship and generous support that two of the founding members of the JHP Board of Directors have given to the journal: Paul Oskar Kristeller (one of the founding directors of JHP and renowned Renaissance scholar) and Richard Popkin (first editor of JHP and noted historian of skepticism).
