Statement on Tenure and Academic Freedom in Wisconsin

The Board of Directors of the Society for Classical Studies has voted unanimously to endorse this statement of concern about proposals pending in the Wisconsin legislature that threaten to undermine several longstanding features of the state’s current higher education system: shared governance, tenure, and academic freedom. The statement was produced by the American Historical Association and endorsed by twenty other associations that, like the SCS, are members of the American Council of Learned Societies.

In Memoriam Charles Henderson, Jr.

I regret to report the death of Charles Henderson, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of the Society from 1962-1965. I had the pleasure of talking to Charles at many meetings of both the SCS and of the Classical Association of New England (CANE) over the years, and I will miss him a great deal. I am very grateful to Ward Briggs for writing this memorial notice for the SCS.

2015 Zeph Stewart Award Winners

The SCS has awarded its second group of Zeph Stewart Latin Teacher Training Awards. Three students currently enrolled in courses leading to their certification as Latin teachers will receive grants that will offset a portion of their tuition payments. To fund this program the Association uses income derived from contributions from the Friends of Zeph Stewart and matching gifts from the National Endowment for the Humanities to the Research and Teaching Endowment established by its Gateway Campaign for Classics in the 21st Century.

Update on Departmental Census

Last Fall, the SCS conducted a census of classics departments that solicited information on students, faculty, and course offerings. We received responses from over 50% of the departments on our list of programs where classics is taught in some form. Click here to see a summary of those responses and to learn about plans for future study of the data.

Scholarships to Academy Vivarium Novum

The Academy Vivarium Novum is offering ten full tuition scholarships for high school students (16-18 years old) and twenty-eight full tuition scholarships for University students (18-24 years old) of any part of the world. The scholarships will cover all of the costs of room, board, teaching and didactic materials for courses to be held from October 5, 2015 until June 18, 2016 on the grounds of the Academy’s campus at Rome.

Winners of 2015 Pedagogy Awards

In 2015 the Society for Classical Studies (SCS), founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association, awarded the third set of its Pedagogy Awards to three outstanding classics teachers. One of the major goals of the Society's capital campaign, Gatekeeper to Gateway: The Campaign for Classics in the Twenty-first Century, was to ensure that an inspiring, well trained teacher would be available for every school and college classics classroom.
