In Memoriam: Gloria Ferrari Pinney

An internationally renowned classical archaeologist and art historian, Gloria Ferrari was born in Bologna and received her Laurea in Lettere Classiche at Università degli Studi di Roma and her Ph.D. in 1976 from the University of Cincinnati. She taught at Wilson College, Bryn Mawr College (where she was the Doreen Canaday Spitzer Professor of Classical Studies), the University of Chicago, and Harvard University, from which she retired in 2003.

In Memoriam: Paul Woodruff

Paul Woodruff, renowned classicist and philosopher and inaugural dean of undergraduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin, died this past weekend at the age of 80. He was the author, editor or translator of more than 20 books, an innovator in undergraduate education, and an award-winning teacher. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Lucia Woodruff, their daughters Rachel and Katherine, and six grandchildren.

As an undergraduate Classics student in the 1980s, I read somewhere the story of a Black man who attempted to register to vote in a southern state under Jim Crow. Local election officials administered him a “literacy test. He passed one such “test,” then another and another, including (the story goes) reading texts in Latin and Greek.

Portions of the annual disbursement received by the Society for Classical Studies and the American Classical League from the Rudolph Masciantonio legacy gift fund will be used to advance the creation of a more inclusive environment in the field of Ancient Mediterranean Studies in K-12 education and offer assistance to teachers of K-12 students and those who are pursuing a career in K-12 education in areas relevant to our discipline (Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classics).
