Call for Nominations: European Studies Undergraduate Paper Prize

The Council for European Studies (CES) is calling for nominations for its European Studies Undergraduate Paper Prize. This prize honors the best advanced research paper on any subject in European Studies written as part of an undergraduate university degree program. Two prizes will be awarded in 2016, one in the Humanities and one in the Social Sciences.

A multi-disciplinary selection committee appointed by the Council’s Executive Committee will choose the winners. Each prize winner will receive $500 and public recognition on the Council’s website and in its newsletter.

In Memoriam: David H. Porter

I am very sorry to report the death of David H. Porter, with whom I worked very closely for almost my entire term as Executive Director. He served as Chair of our Development Committee from its revival in 2000 until this past January. In that role he led an effort that tripled the number of members who made annual giving donations and more than quadrupled the amount raised. He was also an active member of the Steering Committee for the Gateway Campaign.

The American Classical League (ACL) hosts a Latin and Greek teacher placement service https://www.aclclassics.org/pages/teaching-jobs which focuses on available jobs in K-12 schools, although there are also jobs listed at colleges and universities, as well as private tutoring opportunities and positions for administrators at classical schools.

Employers may list jobs at no charge by following the link. ACL members may list a resume on the site which employers can then search.

In Memoriam: Alan Lindley Boegehold

Alan Lindley Boegehold, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Brown University, died on October 28, 2015 at his home in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, in the presence of his wife of 61 years, Julie, and other members of his family. Alan was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 21, 1927; his father, a scientist, was a personal adviser to the president of General Motors. Alan graduated from the Detroit Country Day School in 1944.

Humanities Advocacy Day - March 15, 2016

The SCS is a member of the National Humanities Alliance (NHA), a coalition dedicated to the advancement of humanities education, research, preservation, and public programs. Today is Humanities Advocacy Day (#humanitiesadvocacy16) on Capitol Hill, an annual event organized by NHA. Humanities advocates from around the country will be meeting with their Members of Congress to make the case for humanities funding.
