Call for Proposals: SCS Summer Seminar in 2017 on Material Culture for Classics Graduate Students

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association, seeks proposals from academic institutions interested in hosting a six-week seminar in the Summer of 2017 during which ten graduate students enrolled in programs in classical philology or ancient history will increase and improve their ability to use the art and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world in their scholarship and teaching. Award to SCS Member

SCS Member Pramit Chaudhuri, Associate Professor of Classics at Dartmouth College, is one of seven scholars to receive a Digital Innovation grant this year from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). The title of Prof. Chaudhuri’s project is Computational Analysis of Intertextuality in Classical Literature. Information about all of the recipients is available at the ACLS web site.

Heckman Research Stipends at The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML)

Heckman Stipends, made possible by the A.A. Heckman Endowed Fund, are awarded semi-annually. Up to 10 stipends in amounts up to $2,000 are available each year. Funds may be applied toward travel to and from St. John's College in Collegeville, MN; housing and meals at the University; and costs related to duplication of the Library's microfilm or digital resources. The Stipend may be supplemented by other sources of funding but may not be held simultaneously with another HMML Stipend or Fellowship. Holders of the Stipend must wait at least two years before applying again.

Humboldt University Summer School: Globalized Classics

Doctoral students and early career scholars are invited to apply for summer school on Globalized Classics, held at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in August and September 2015. The summer university is devoted to the study of the Ancient World from comparative and interdisciplinary points of view. It will examine the impact of globalization and non-Western perspectives on the study of the Graeco-Roman Classics.

CADMO - Revista de História Antiga

As a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, CADMO publishes original studies, findings and relevant "state of the art" essays on Ancient History and the study of Ancient cultures. It welcomes contributions related to the Ancient Near-Eastern World (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Syro-Palestinian area and Anatolia) and to the Classical World (Greece, Rome and the Ancient Mediterranean, including Late Antiquity).

ACTFL Survey of Primary and Secondary School Language Enrollments

The SCS is an affiliate member of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The Council has asked us to encourage all of our members who are teaching at the primary or secondary levels to complete a survey it is conducting on enrollment in foreign language classes. This survey complements the one recently conducted by the Modern Language Association concerning enrollments at the college and university level.

Summer Latin Course

The Philology Institute in Wilmore, KY will offer an intensive, six-week summer course in Latin from June 15 to July 24, 2015. The cost is $2500 for the equivalent of two semesters of regular coursework, and the program offers a limited number of $500 scholarships. The course enrollment is capped at 12 students.
