Deadline Extended for 2016 Roundtable Discussion Sessions

This 90-minute joint session with the AIA consists of a number of tables devoted to discussions of a variety of topics, with at least one discussion leader for each topic. Members are invited to propose themselves as roundtable discussion leaders. Topics may be the leader’s area of scholarly interest or an issue important to the profession. Since certain topics lend themselves to presentation by more than one leader, proposals for multiple leaders are welcome. The person submitting the proposal must be an SCS member in good standing for 2015.

New NEH Program: "Humanities in the Public Square"

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced a new grant opportunity, called “Humanities in the Public Square,” that will put humanities scholars in direct dialogue with the public on some of the most pressing issues of today— through public forums, community programs, and the development of educational resources.

Recent Awards to SCS Members

Hans Beck, McGill University, has won the Anneliese Maier Research Award 2015. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has selected eleven researchers from outside of Germany to receive this year’s prize. Each award is valued at 250,000 Euros and is granted annually to outstanding humanities scholars and social scientists. It is designated to finance research collaboration over a period of up to five years with specialist colleagues in Germany. The 11 award winners were selected from a total of 72 nominees from 22 countries.

Dear Colleagues,

In this, my first presidential letter, I want to begin by acknowledging the singular honor of being elected to this office by you, the members. My predecessors have set a high standard and I hope not to fall short of their distinguished example. I thank especially my immediate predecessors, Denis Feeney and Kathryn Gutzwiller, for all the help they have given me as I assume this role, and for the leadership they have shown as the Society has moved forward to take on new roles and new challenges.

UCLA Mellon Fellowships in Post-Classical Latin

The UCLA Department of Classics is delighted to announce the award of a $700,000 grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Division of the Humanities to support the preparation and training of young scholars in post-classical Latin for graduate programs in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The program has been funded for three years and will have a post-baccalaureate and graduate fellowship component. The administrative Director of the UCLA Mellon Program in Post-Classical Latin will be Professor Robert Gurval.

This survey is intended for faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows or other researchers in the Humanities, who have done research in both open and closed stacks research libraries.

Call for Proposals: SCS Summer Seminar in 2017 on Material Culture for Classics Graduate Students

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association, seeks proposals from academic institutions interested in hosting a six-week seminar in the Summer of 2017 during which ten graduate students enrolled in programs in classical philology or ancient history will increase and improve their ability to use the art and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world in their scholarship and teaching. This seminar has been funded by generous grants from the Samuel H.
