APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

The APA Committee on Ancient and Modern Performance (CAMP) solicits applications from APA members interested in serving as local scholars for Aquila Theatre’s Ancient Greeks/Modern Lives: Poetry-Drama-Dialogue program, an important new nationwide partnership between libraries and the theatre supported by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program will have an additional focus on cross-cultural impact relating to the African-American, Asian-American and Latino experience and a special emphasis on veterans and their families and will be guided by consultants specializing in these areas. Ancient Greeks/Modern Lives will travel to 100 library and arts center locations nationwide. Program details are available on the project web site.

Scholars are particularly needed who are within the vicinity of or able to travel to the following areas:

  • Pikes Peak, CO
  • Pueblo City, CO
  • Skokie, IL
  • Palm Beach, FL
  • Lafayette, LA
  • Rolla, MO
  • Warren County NC
  • Wilmington, NC
  • Martinsville, VA
  • Princeton, WV
  • Sheridan, WY
  • Gillette, WY
  • Cody, WY

Scholars selected will receive a stipend of up to $2,000 and will work under the guidance of the program director Professor Peter Meineck of New York University. Scholars will be advised on their program content by Dr. Meineck and the program consultants and supported by the program staff in New York and will be responsible for the following:

1) Select texts and host library reading groups for four sessions.

2) Deliver a lecture at each library and/or arts center on the continuing influence of Greek literature, keyed into the program themes.

3) Moderate a town-hall style discussion among audience members following a staged reading of selections from Greek drama by Aquila Theatre.

4) All selected scholars are expected to attend a training session at the APA Annual Meeting inPhiladelphia, PA onJanuary 5-8, 2012 or participate in a webinar orientation session.

5) In addition, scholars will be required to publish their talks either as podcasts or online.
