Pseudo-Oppian’s Cynegetica ­­– On the Hunt for Ethics and Poetics

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Cynegetica of Pseudo-Oppian has received limited scholarly attention. However, philological efforts such as Otto Rebmann’s book Sprachliche Neuerungen (1918), Wolfgang Schmitt’s commentary on book 1 (1969) and especially Manolis Papathomopoulos’ Teubneriana (2003) have all laid a solid foundation for further hermeneutical study. These works were explored in some detail by Adam Nicholas Bartley (2003) and Giuseppe Agosta (2009) in their respective monographs and are accompanied by a selection of journal articles on diverse topics such as textual criticism, meter and the question of authorship.

This volume aims to collect and develop scholarly approaches to the Cynegetica by focusing on unexplored areas of this fascinating example of Greek Imperial poetry. More precisely, this collection aims to concentrate on at least four strands of literary functionality:

    • First, how do we examine the referential function of the poem? Much of the Cynegetica relates to a reality beyond the text. One finds descriptions of animals, geographical areas, peoples and hunting methods that the author claims to know about or has possibly even seen with his own eyes. How do these observations inform us about the reality of hunting in antiquity? How do we explore the interactions between reality and fictionality within the text?

    • Second, the Cynegetica is replete with ethical comments on the vices, virtues and behaviours of animals and humans alike. At the same time, it is dedicated to both emperor and goddess. The question is this: How do we evaluate the appellative function of the text? What do we make of these moral-philosophical statements? And how do we locate them within the political framework of the Severan dynasty? What are the theological and religious implications of the text? Is there an animal ethics in the Cynegetica?

    • Third, there is still ample room for exploration with regard to the poem’s aesthetic function. What are the hermeneutical consequences of its linguistic innovations? How do the intertextual relations to older didactic poetry (esp. the Halieutica) and other hunting manuals (e.g. Grattius, Nemesianus, Xenophon, etc.) manifest themselves? Is there a way to navigate between the observed mosaic character of the piece and a more coherent overarching structure?

    • Fourth, and finally, the project invites contributions on the creative and scholarly reception of the Cynegetica as well as the cultural and intellectual environment and implications of the poem’s reception history. Why was the text so popular in the 16th century? How do we judge its value as a philosophical argument within the contemporary Cartesian view of animals? What led to its neglect throughout the following centuries? How do we read the poem in light of the modern animal-rights debate?

In sum, the goal of this volume is to function as a prism by bringing together scholars from various academic levels, backgrounds, and study directions in order to develop a diverse portfolio of ideas, approaches and perspectives to this challenging yet understudied text.

Lessons from COVID-19: Reflections on Teaching and Learning Remotely

Special Issue of Teaching Classical Languages

As the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced classes to move to “remote delivery,” students and teachers alike are fearful that both “Everything Will Change” and “Nothing Will Change.” For teachers concerned about the rise of online and distance education, this emergency foray into online teaching prefigures a turn to more permanent and widespread online delivery of coursework: everything will change. For underserved students for whom school serves as a safe place and provides the possibility for socio-economic mobility, the emphasis on technology in remote delivery reiterates geographic and class disparities: nothing will change.

The world over, we are hoping that we will emerge from this period somehow changed for the better: that we will learn lessons about what really matters and how better to do what matters most. We are concerned to make the best use of this bizarre opportunity to reconsider our lives, our priorities, our work, our teaching.

The SCS Board has endorsed a statement from the American Sociological Association calling on higher education administrations to revise a number of their academic policies.

Two main policy recommendations include recommending "that institutions make temporary adjustments to timelines for student progression and completion, including revising funding timelines as appropriate" and to adjust "expectations for learning and scholarship during this period...[including] alternate grading options or amended graduation requirements."

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS) and the Women’s Classical Caucus (WCC) would like to announce the creation of the SCS-WCC COVID-19 Relief Fund, a new award fund to support classicists, particularly graduate students and contingent faculty, experiencing precarity as a result of the pandemic. Applicants do not have to be current members of the SCS or WCC but do need to be currently active scholars or graduate students who study the ancient Mediterranean world. We know that what we can offer is unlikely to match the needs arising from the crisis, but we hope that these microgrants can give immediate, unrestricted financial support.

Each year the SCS holds a roundtable at regional classics meetings across the country to speak directly with members and non-members about a particular issue that looms large in the field. Due to the cancelation, postponement, or virtual movement of regional classics association meetings, the SCS would like to hold an additional, virtual roundtable with this year's topic: "The 'Limits' of Classical Studies," where we consider what geographies, cultures, and time periods fall into the loose category that we call the classics.

Given that extraordinary demands are presently being placed on everyone’s time (to mention only that), SCS is granting an extended deadline for Category II affiliated groups to submit affiliated group reports on panels for 2021.

The deadline for submission of the Affiliated Group Reports is now 8 June, although we encourage any affiliated group that is ready to submit by April 21 to do so. This extended timeframe will allow groups to renew their calls for papers with a new deadline, should they wish to do so. We would suggest a deadline of 10 May for affiliated group abstracts, to provide time for the usual vetting process. Additionally, we will allow members to submit abstracts for both individual papers and for Affiliated Group panels, to preserve the policy of allowing two routes onto the program for individual submitters, albeit with the submission deadlines in reverse order and without the possibility of knowing the result of the first submission before making the second (these are complicated times!). Should an abstract be accepted in both forms, the paper will appear in the program on the affiliated group panel, not as an individual submission in a paper session.

Dee Clayman is Professor of Classics at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York (CUNY). She was born in New York and earned her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1967. She received her M.A. in 1969 and her Ph.D. in 1972, both from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Clayman is an expert on Greek poetry, particularly of the Hellenistic age.
