14th Moisa Research Seminar on Ancient Greek and Roman Music Bressanone/Brixen, 2-6 July 2019

The 14th Moisa Research Seminar will take place from July 2nd to July 6th, 2019 in Bressanone/Brixen (Italy) with the commitment of Padua University and of its Department of Cultural Heritage (https://www.brixen.org/en/bressanone/city-centre.html).

In 2019, we shall focus on Music in Pausanias’ Guide to Greece, looking especially at the traces of ancient music in the ten books concerning the musical regions and oral tradition. It will be the first time that Pausanias’ text is analyzed from the musicological perspective. In previous years, the topics examined in the morning sessions have included texts ranging from the Pseudo-Plutarchan De Musica and Aristoxenus’ Elementa Harmonica to themes such as Music in Comedy and Music and Women.

The morning seminars (10am–1pm) will be led by Prof. Egert Pöhlmann (University of Erlangen), Prof. Ian Rutherford (University of Reading), Prof. Angelo Meriani (University of Salerno), Prof. Donatella Restani (University of Bologna), and Prof. Daniela Castaldo (University of Salento). Afternoons are free. The evening lectures, which normally start around 6 pm, provide an overview of the most recent developments in the thriving field of ancient Greek and Roman Music, as well as a chance to improve current projects thanks to audience questions.
