CFP: Classical Reception in Medieval Ireland
(Co-sponsored by the American Society of Medieval Irish Studies and the Classical Association of New England)
Classical Association of New England 119th Annual Meeting,
Yale University, New Haven CT, March 21-22, 2025.

Many texts in Middle Irish are adaptations of Latin texts, including the Irish Aeneid, the Destruction of Troy, Statius, and the Homecoming of Ulysses McLaertes, among others. All together they form one of the earliest and most extensive medieval groups of such works, receptions of classical literature in a vernacular literature, However, these texts are not generally known outside of Celtic Studies as receptions of classical literature; within Celtic Studies, moreover, they are not often studied by classical scholars as distinct from Celtic scholars.

We seek papers from scholars and teachers of Classics, Celtic Studies, Medieval Studies, History, or allied fields relevant to these texts or other aspects of classical reception in Medieval Ireland. Panelists may consider the historical context of the texts, the changes made from the Latin source material, the place of these texts within medieval Irish literature, or parallel literary developments in England or on the European continent. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list however: any proposals for papers dealing with any aspects of classics in medieval Ireland will be welcome.

Send proposals as Word attachments to John Higgins at jhiggins@smith.edu or Brian Cook at bscook1066@gmail.com by December 1st, 2024.
