University of Florida Classics Department Undergraduate Research Symposium

The graduate students at the University of Florida Department of Classics, in partnership with the Department of Classics and the Center for Greek Studies, are pleased to announce the call for papers for the UF Classics Undergraduate Research Symposium to be held on our Gainesville, Florida campus on Friday, November 15, 2024.

As the field of Classics grows and changes with the new millennium, so, too, should the pool of researchers called upon to advance the field. To look to the future, we invite abstracts from advanced undergraduates on the cusp of their application to graduate programs to participate in a research symposium with their peers.

The topic of the papers is open but should address some element of the ancient world. The faculty of the UF Classics Department represent a wide variety of research interests, including Greek and Latin language and literature, digital humanities, reception studies, ancient law and democracy, Greek and Roman drama, Greek and Roman history, and archaeology. Papers may but do not have to address one of these specialty areas.

We encourage students to submit abstracts from senior theses or successful seminar papers written under the supervision of a faculty member at their home institution.

Oral presentations will be maximum 15 minutes in length. The conference format will consist of three panels, each with a faculty respondent.

Abstracts for papers are due no later than 11:59pm EST on Sunday, September 8, 2024. Submissions should be completed using this form. A confirmation email will be sent within 72 hours of receipt.

Should your proposal be accepted, please be advised:

  • Research symposium participants are expected to arrive in Gainesville by 3pm on Thursday, November 14, to participate in a campus visit and the UF Classics Undergraduate Research Showcase.
  • Participants should ask their faculty mentor to guide them through applying for internal travel funding at their home institution or through external channels.
  • When submitting your paper, please indicate whether you will be seeking travel funding from UF’s Center for Greek Studies.

Proposals should expect a response no later than Monday, September 16, 2024.

We welcome any questions or requests for clarification. All inquiries are to be sent to gradsymposium@classics.ufl.edu.
