CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Fellowships in the CAS Research Group

“Editing Metaphysics”

Center for Advanced Studies, LMU Munich

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich is a forum for intense international
academic exchange. Its purpose is to promote cooperation with national and
international Visiting Fellows who work closely on collaborative projects with LMU
professors. In order to intensify cooperation between researchers at LMU Munich and
leading experts from other universities, the Center has set up a major new program,
the CAS Research Groups.

The CAS Research Group “Editing Metaphysics” was successfully initiated by
Professor Oliver Primavesi (Classics, LMU) and will commence work in October 2017.
The objective of this CAS Research Group is to prepare a new critical edition of the
Greek text of Aristotle’s Metaphysics for the Series “Oxford Classical Texts”. A full
collation of all independent Greek manuscripts has already been undertaken and a
specimen edition of the first book was published by OUP. What remains to be done in
the first place is to establish readings of the two hyparchetypes (alpha and beta) for the
remaining 13 books and to evaluate them from both a linguistic and a philosophical
point of view. During the academic year 2017/2018, work will focus on the last books
from chapter K 8 onwards, where the stemmatic relationships between the
manuscripts seem to differ from those predominating in the previous books.
The aim of this program is to invite to LMU Munich internationally renowned
researchers who can contribute significantly to the work of this CAS Research Group.
Researchers will find an open and stimulating research environment in an
interdisciplinary setting, not only in the Center for Advanced Studies itself, but also in
the Munich School of Ancient Philosophy.

The Center for Advanced Studies will provide financing and organizational support for
visits of between four weeks and six months during the period between October 2017
and September 2018. Travel and accommodation will be paid for, and an expense
allowance or other compensation (subject to individual agreement) will be provided to
cover operating costs or as recompense for any loss of income sustained. Guests will
receive a workspace in the Center according to requirement and availability, and will
have access to all its facilities.

Applications should consist of a brief outline (1-2 pages) of the expertise, intersection
of research interests with and intended contribution to the CAS Research Group.
Applications should also contain relevant credentials and a résumé including a list of
the most recent publications. In order to strengthen the role of women in research,
female scholars are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please submit all the application documents electronically (in one PDF file) by 15 October 2016 to
