New Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at the Harvard University Department of the Classics

The Department of the Classics at Harvard announces the following opportunities and initiatives designed to advance our community’s goals of diversity and inclusion. Prospective applicants and colleagues with questions about these programs are welcome to contact the Department Administrator Teresa Wu (ttwu@fas.harvard.edu).

1. Summer School Scholarships for Intensive Ancient Greek or Latin at the Harvard Summer School

The Department of the Classics offers two scholarships to enable high school or college students to take an accelerated introductory course in Ancient Greek or Latin at the online Harvard Summer School in summer 2021. In addition to the course fee, the scholarship will provide a stipend to compensate the successful candidate for loss of summer income during the seven weeks of the intensive course. In the belief that our community and our discipline thrive on diversity, we especially welcome applications from members of groups historically underrepresented in the field of Classics (e.g. underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, students from disadvantaged economic backgrounds) and those who are interested in making contributions to access, inclusion, diversity and outreach. 

Application requirements:

  • cover letter explaining your interest in the program, your goals for taking the class and any relevant background.
  • resume* with the names and contact information of two referees whom the selection committee may contact to provide a reference on your behalf.
  • copy (scanned) of transcript/report card from institution currently attending or last attended (unofficial is acceptable).

Eligibility requirements:

  • be enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private high-school, college or university.
  • be in good academic standing.
  • be a documented U.S. citizen or non-citizen national, or permanent resident in possession of an alien registration receipt card (I-551) or another legal document of such status at the time of application. International citizens studying in the United States with an F-1 Visa are not eligible.

Applications are due Friday, February 26 at midnight EST.

Please note that applicants will be notified of our decision by March 2. Scholarship recipient will need to submit an application to the Harvard Summer School. The application fee will be covered by this scholarship.

2. GSAS summer research opportunity for undergraduates

The Department of the Classics provides summer research opportunities to connect undergraduates interested in doctoral work in Classics with faculty members in our department. The 10-week program, offered through GSAS and the Leadership Alliance, provides a stipend and access to a host of networking and mentoring opportunities to conduct a research project under the supervision of a faculty member in our department. We currently welcome applications interested in fields related to Greco-Roman antiquity, including but not limited to Republican and Imperial Latin literature; Cicero and Roman oratory; Latin historiography; reception of Latin literature; history of classical scholarship. There are some eligibility requirements as it pertains to academic standing and residency status but the program is otherwise open to undergraduates enrolled in any accredited college or university in the US.

One of the fascinations occupying Classical Studies in North America and Western Europe during the 1980s and 1990s was the way images refract the particularities of societies that produce them. One look at the imaginary of sixth- or fifth-century Athens would provide you a blistering array of human forms: doughty warriors, mourning women, drunken gods; the young and the old, Greek and barbarian. This last pair seemed especially interesting at the twilight of the Cold War.

Deadline Extension

We've extended the deadline for the SCS Outreach Prize to September 27, 2021.

The annual Outreach Prize of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS), a prize of $300, recognizes an outstanding project or program by an SCS member or members that makes available and accessible an aspect of classical antiquity to an audience other than Classics scholars or students at their home institutions.

Experiencing Space: Passages from Antiquity to the Middle Ages VIII

Tampere, August 17-19, 2022 (in person/hybrid conference)

The focus of the Passages conference series lies on society and the history of everyday life. This time we are concentrating on the social construction and experiences of space, aiming to understand how it affected social frameworks, built communities and shaped individual lives. The “Spatial Turn” has directed scholars’ interest towards the interconnection between communities, individuals and space, but larger comparisons between eras and cultures are still mainly missing. We aim to approach space as an analytical tool, “experience” offering a novel conceptual method for the study in this field.

One of the things that makes Classics exciting is its openness to new ideas and innovative approaches to the study of antiquity. For instance, classicists have been in the vanguard of the digital humanities, using new methods to curate and analyze texts (e.g. TLG, DLL, Open Greek and Latin, and so on), inscriptions (EAGLE, PHI), and papyri (papyri.info), adopting innovative GIS technologies and platforms (Pleiades, Orbis), and deploying powerful tools to unlock precious fragments of lost works. Classical archaeologists, too, have a particularly strong tradition of openness to new tools and techniques, from isotope geochemistry in the study of ancient marble to novel ways of cataloguing and quantifying material and visualizing ancient structures and sites. Vibrant subfields like bioarchaeology and zooarchaeology are inherently interdisciplinary. More broadly, ideas and approaches informed by anthropology, economics, and psychology have enriched the study of antiquity for decades.

The Ancient Worlds, Modern Communities initiative (AnWoMoCo), launched by the SCS in 2019 as the Classics Everywhere initiative, supports projects that seek to engage broader publics — individuals, groups, and communities — in critical discussion of and creative expression related to the ancient Mediterranean, the global reception of Greek and Roman culture, and the history of teaching and scholarship in the field of classical studies. As part of this initiative, the SCS has funded 111 projects, ranging from school programming to reading groups, prison programs, public talks and conferences, digital projects, and collaborations with artists in theater, opera, music, dance, and the visual arts. The initiative welcomes applications from all over the world. To date, it has funded projects in 25 states and 11 countries, including Canada, UK, Italy, Greece, Spain, Belgium, Ghana, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and India.

This post centers on two projects that employ Greek and Roman literature in innovative ways to deal with contemporary issues. The first project draws inspiration from Euripides’ Trojan Women to facilitate the expression and sharing of intense experiences between students in the University of California and female prisoners, while the second project adapts Ovid’s Metamorphoses in a one-woman show that explores the role of women in our post #MeToo era.
