The Institute for Classical Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Literature at University of
Cologne invites applications for a Ph.D. position with a weekly working time of 29,87 hours (75% position)
in the interdisciplinary research project “Ancient representations in North Africa as forms of
Late Antique and postcolonial knowledge production.”  Initial contract is limited for 3 years.
Starting time will be October 01, 2016. The salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale
if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.

The planned PhD-project will be part of an interdisciplinary project, which comprises two
different perspectives on North Africa. The first will be a modern philological and cultural
theory perspective on North-African texts (in French), the second a Classical Philological
approach analyzing and commenting late antique Latin texts on the north-African church
father St. Augustine.

Starting from the question of memory and re-appropriation in cultural discourses in antiquity
and in modern times, the research project will elucidate the special function of these
representations (for instance of the personality of Saint Augustine) in their respective era.
The study concerned here aims at a philological analysis and commentary on the late
antique Life of St. Augustin, but will also involve an in-depth study of the discursive
strategies of the North African reception of Antiquity in an attempt to understand its
historical and cultural impact on the author’s present environment and society.

The doctoral candidate will graduate at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of
Cologne in the field of Latin Philology.

Application requirements:

A Master in Classical Studies /Latin Philology including a demonstrated interest in Late
Antiquity and a working knowledge of French. Expertise in other disciplines such as
Comparative Literature and Romance language are welcome but not a precondition.
