There will be a special guided tour of the new ISAW exhibition in New York exploring the influence of antiquity on early 20th century dance titled “Hymn to Apollo: The Ancient World and the Ballets Russes” on April 11 at 4.30pm at ISAW (15 E. 84th St.). The tour is free for SCS members but space in the galleries is limited, so please sign up for the tour here.
At 6pm on April 11, Dr. Tom Sapsford, Classics scholar, Resident Fellow at the Center for Ballet and the Arts, and former dancer with the Royal Ballet, will present a lecture at ISAW titled “Moving in Parallel: Ancient and Modern Dance Makers”. Sapsford will compare dancers’ lives in classical antiquity with those of early twentieth century dancers in Paris. He will explore how these temporally disparate dance makers gained their specific expertise, what we can know of their day-to-day lives, and how each in turn radically changed their audience's understanding of the power of the kinetic. If you wish to attend the lecture as well, please sign up through the ISAW website here. The lecture is free and open to the public.
