Art and Technology (Research Institute)

2023/2024

The making of art has always been impacted by the limitations and advances of the technologies at hand. Throughout human history, artists have invariably embraced technological innovations—from the casting of ancient bronzes to the invention of the tin paint tube to the printing of three-dimensional objects—and harnessed the new possibilities afforded by them. Art and technology are deeply intertwined; after all, the terms “technology” and “technique” are both derived from the Greek word techne, meaning “art” or “craft.” Technological developments spur artistic experimentation by extending the horizon of what is possible and by encouraging artists to consider traditional mediums in new ways and to explore new mediums altogether.

The theme of “Art & Technology” encompasses questions on manufacture and craft, process and invention, materiality and immateriality, and the digital and the virtual. How do indigenous epistemologies support or underpin alternative concepts and frameworks for understanding the relationship between art and technology? How do technologies move across cultures, and how are they transformed in the process? Applicants may also consider the connection between ancient technologies and contemporary practices, transcultural adaptations or evolutions in technology, implications of nonhuman systems of production, productive misuse by artists, and how technological advances have changed and challenged modes of viewership.

 

African American Art History Initiative (Research Institute)

2023/2024

Getty Research Institute invites applications from scholars of African American art and cultural history who would like to participate in the upcoming 2023/2024 scholar year. Two opportunities for nine-month residencies have been created under the Getty’s African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI), an ambitious program that aims to address an incomplete version of American art history by increasing the Research Institute’s African American—related collections, research, exhibitions, projects, publications, events, and partnerships with local and national institutions. The fellowships will provide financial support and housing to scholars undertaking research projects that speak to the goals of the initiative. As part of the larger scholar year cohort, AAAHI fellows will have opportunities to present their research and receive feedback from an interdisciplinary group of peers.

Our special collections include archival and primary source material related to African American art history—particularly post-World War II, modern, and contemporary—and we are acquiring and processing major collections or collaborating on acquisitions from a range of artists and institutions. We welcome expressions of interest from scholars working at predoctoral, postdoctoral, mid-career, and senior levels who focus on African American art and cultural history in all time periods and media and in a broad range of theoretical and methodological traditions. Applicants should indicate how their project would benefit from our resources, which might include special collections, the Getty Library, or the scholar year cohort, and from alignment with AAAHI’s aims and goals.

 

Paul Revere Williams Research Project (an AAAHI-related project, Research Institute)

2023/2024

Paul Revere Williams was one of America’s greatest twentieth-century architects. During a prolific career spanning almost six decades, Williams mastered a wide range of architectural styles and designed more than 3,000 structures working for individual clients as well as government and industry. He also overcame the legal, social, professional, and institutional barriers that prevented many African Americans from entering the field of architecture. The Getty has launched a major research project focusing on Williams’ life and legacy, which includes a one-year residential research opportunity and welcomes expressions of interest from emerging scholars of architectural history who would like to join the project’s team.

We have three themes for the upcoming 23-24 Scholar year and the applications are due Oct. 3, 2022.

Tupac Shakur, saying these words to journalist Mats Nileskär in 1994, articulated the centrality of community and collective history to hip hop and offered his response to the vexed question of the wellspring of poetic inspiration. Nearly two decades after Tupac’s murder, Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar gave new life to those words in his track “Mortal Man,” recasting Nileskär’s interview and intersplicing Tupac’s voice with his own, so that it is Lamar who seems to be in dialogue with Tupac. The result is an impossible conversation between the living and the dead: impossible because Tupac died when Lamar was just nine years old. But in highlighting and embodying Tupac’s perception that rap gives voice to the stories of one’s dead comrades, Lamar’s “sampling” of the conversation centers Tupac’s vision and acknowledges the debt Lamar owes to his predecessors, cementing the connection between them.

If you attended the 2022 Annual Meeting earlier this year — and if you woke up bright and early on Saturday morning! — you may have been lucky enough to tune in to the very first panel sponsored by the Ancient Worlds, Modern Communities Initiative (AnWoMoCo). Recent recipients of a microgrant from this program gathered from all over America, Canada, and even Ghana to present seven exciting public-facing projects that aim to bring Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies out of the ivory tower. The goal is to reach audiences, organizations, and people who might otherwise never have the opportunity to engage with the history, literature, language, archaeology, culture, texts, and individuals of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Ten presenters shared their projects, which ranged from primary school curricula, prison programming, visual and performing arts, and digital initiatives. I was beyond inspired by all of the incredible people who presented that day, so I jumped at the chance to summarize their contributions here for those who missed it.

CAAS ARC Workshop: Diversity Policies are for Everyone

The Antiracism Committee (ARC) of The Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS) is organizing another workshop on diversity policies. Through a series of case studies, this workshop will explore ways to create and improve on diversity policies so that they can be more helpful to BIPOC students and scholars. The Classics Program at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), advertises its graduate programs in Latin education. These programs combine courses and mentoring in the vibrant environs of New York City. They aim to foster the ability to make Latin compelling to a diverse population of middle and high school students. Both programs lead to certification in New York State. Applications are accepted in both the Fall and the Spring. The deadline for applications to start in Fall 2022 is March 15th, 2022, but consideration may be made for later applications. 

  1. MA in Adolescent Education, Grades 7-12 – Latin

A 49 to 50-credit course sequence in Latin, Classics, and Education that prepares students to teach Latin in grades 7-12. This program is run jointly by the Classics Program in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education.
