SCS-WCC COVID-19 Relief Fund

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS) and the Women’s Classical Caucus (WCC) would like to announce the creation of the SCS-WCC COVID-19 Relief Fund, a new award fund to support classicists, particularly graduate students and contingent faculty, experiencing precarity as a result of the pandemic. Applicants do not have to be current members of the SCS or WCC but do need to be currently active scholars or graduate students who study the ancient Mediterranean world. We know that what we can offer is unlikely to match the needs arising from the crisis, but we hope that these microgrants can give immediate, unrestricted financial support.

Awards from this fund will be provided to offer quick relief, based on need, in amounts up to $500. Every award recipient will also receive a free one-year membership in the WCC and the SCS. Awards will be disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those with the greatest need, particularly those who have lost funding, paid work, or access to essential research resources as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We anticipate several rounds of grants, but the initial set of COVID-19 Relief Awards will come from a jointly managed SCS-WCC fund with seed money in the amount of $15,000 (previously earmarked to support travel and services related to summer activities and FemCon 2020).

To sustain this fund into the future, we would also gratefully welcome donations to this new fund from more financially secure members of our community and anyone who simply has a little more and would like to support others who have less. If you would like to contribute to this fund, you can click here to donate via SCS or click here to donate via WCC. Your support, in any amount, would be greatly appreciated.

We encourage anybody in need who studies the ancient Mediterranean world and is based in North America to apply, including those working on Classics-related projects. To apply for this funding, please click here to complete a simple form, which will ask for the following information:

  • Your contact information, including a mailing address and your payment preference (mailed check or electronic payment)
  • Your current or most recent institutional affiliation
  • Brief details of your situation, including the following information:
    • Current status and employment (e.g. ABD student, 2nd year graduate student, Visiting Assistant Professor, independent scholar, etc.)
    • Basis of need (e.g. you lost employment or are between jobs; you expected to have free room and board on a summer dig, etc.)
    • Amount requested and intended use (e.g. rent, groceries, babysitting, research material or technology, internet upgrade, convert a project into a digital medium, etc.)
    • Urgency of need (i.e. when the money would be most useful)
    • Other funds available, received, or due to you (e.g. you applied for relief funds through your university but the decision is pending; please include any relevant dates)

A special committee jointly appointed by the SCS and WCC will review applications monthly and start distributing funds as soon as possible. The goal is to distribute awards by the 20th of each month for as many months as needed or until funds run out. All details will be treated as confidential. Payments will be made by check or PayPal, and funds are unrestricted. You may apply more than once, but priority will be given to those in the greatest need who have not yet received an award.

Our sixth interview in the Contingent Faculty Series is a virtual conversation between Dr. Theodora B. Kopestonsky and Dr. Stephanie Kimmey. Dr. Stephanie Kimmey recently joined the Department of Classics at Colorado College as a Visiting Assistant Professor. She received her PhD in Art History and Archaeology from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 2017. Stephanie’s research explores the intersection of Greek religion and daily life through everyday objects and ceramics to better understand the individual, personal experiences through the things people leave behind. She has been active in excavations throughout Greece since 2006, working at Nemea, Mycenae, and Aidonia. Before joining Colorado College, Stephanie worked as the Assistant Director of the MU Writing Center.

Dr. Ashley A. Simone, 33, died September 16, 2021 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born February 4, 1988 in Colorado Springs to Jeanie Young and Gary Crooks and grew up in Palmer Lake, CO.

Ashley graduated high school from The Classical Academy. She showed exceptional talent in art and an aptitude for Latin at an early age. During her junior high and high school years, Ashley enjoyed riding and showing horses. She also competed in 4-H horse judging and knowledge bowl competitions, and enjoyed many special friends who joined or supported her in those activities.

In 2009, while pursuing her undergraduate degree at Baylor University, Ashley traveled abroad for a semester of study at St. Andrews, Scotland. She spent the following summer in Athens, Greece, where she was an excavator at an archaeological dig.

Ashley completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Baylor, graduating magna cum laude in May of 2011. As a University Scholar, she studied Classics and Great Texts in Baylor’s Honors College and her undergraduate thesis was awarded outstanding distinction.

A Call for 2023 Program Directors

Would you like to direct a tour or workshop for the Vergilian Society in 2023? 

Vergilian Society tours are designed to appeal to a wide range of travelers interested in the ancient Mediterranean.  We welcome college students, high school students, instructors and nonprofessionals.

For 2023, we are particularly interested in tours of the ancient Mediterranean or study programs (such as Latin workshops) that are based at the Villa Vergiliana, a study center in the Bay of Naples, Italy.

One of the fascinations occupying Classical Studies in North America and Western Europe during the 1980s and 1990s was the way images refract the particularities of societies that produce them. One look at the imaginary of sixth- or fifth-century Athens would provide you a blistering array of human forms: doughty warriors, mourning women, drunken gods; the young and the old, Greek and barbarian. This last pair seemed especially interesting at the twilight of the Cold War.

The annual Outreach Prize of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS), a prize of $300, recognizes an outstanding project or program by an SCS member or members that makes available and accessible an aspect of classical antiquity to an audience other than Classics scholars or students at their home institutions.

Experiencing Space: Passages from Antiquity to the Middle Ages VIII

Tampere, August 17-19, 2022 (in person/hybrid conference)

The focus of the Passages conference series lies on society and the history of everyday life. This time we are concentrating on the social construction and experiences of space, aiming to understand how it affected social frameworks, built communities and shaped individual lives. The “Spatial Turn” has directed scholars’ interest towards the interconnection between communities, individuals and space, but larger comparisons between eras and cultures are still mainly missing. We aim to approach space as an analytical tool, “experience” offering a novel conceptual method for the study in this field.
