Apply to be Nominated for a Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowship or Seed Grant

Once again, the Whiting Foundation has invited the Society for Classical Studies to nominate four scholars for the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowships and Seed grants. SCS will be nominating two scholars selected last academic year, who have elected to use their nominations in this year’s application cycle. We are also issuing an open call for applications from which the Committee on Public Information and Media Relations will select two additional nominees.

Below you can read more about the fellowships and seed grants, and find guidelines for applying to SCS to be a nominee.

About the Whiting Public Engagement Programs:

These programs aim to celebrate and empower early-career humanities faculty who undertake ambitious, usually deeply collaborative projects to infuse the depth, historical richness, and nuance of the humanities into public life. The two programs are:

  • A Fellowship of $50,000 for projects far enough into development or execution to present specific, compelling evidence that they will successfully engage the intended public.
  • A Seed Grant of $10,000 for projects at a somewhat earlier stage of development, where more modest resources are needed to test or pilot a project or to collaborate with partners to finalize the planning for a larger project and begin work.

Eligible nominees are early-career, full-time faculty at accredited US institutions of higher learning; these nominees may choose to apply to either program, depending on the stage of development of their public-facing program. Fellowships and grants would be used in academic year 2021-2022.

You can read the full guidelines and eligibility criteria for the two programs online here.

If you are interested in being considered as a SCS nominee:

Please do not apply directly to the Whiting Foundation. Only those nominees selected by SCS should apply to the Foundation in the summer. Please also note that SCS cannot nominate you if you are being nominated by another organization or institution. If you are interested in being nominated, please send the following to the Executive Director (helen.cullyer@nyu.edu) via email no later than 5pm EDT on March 23, 2020:

  1. A statement regarding your eligibility for the program and a brief description of your public-facing project. Please indicate whether you are interested in a fellowship or seed grant. This document should be no more than 2 pages (double-spaced) in length;
  2. A current CV.

The Committee on Public Information and Media Relations will review all applications and select two nominees by April 20, 2020. SCS will transmit the names of nominees to the Whiting Foundation by May 1, 2020. Nominees will submit first-round applications to the Whiting Foundation directly by June 15, 2020.

If you have any questions, please contact Executive Director Helen Cullyer and Chair of the Committee on Public Information and Media Relations Shubha Pathak.
