The Department of Classical Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for the position of Chairperson at the rank of Associate, Advanced Associate, or Full Professor beginning in the academic year 2021-22. The department seeks applicants with expertise in the Ancient Mediterranean, with a focus on the Ancient Near East (Middle East) and/or Africa. The successful candidate will lead a growing department of six full-time faculty members; majors and minors in Classical Civilization, Latin, and Ancient Greek; and a post-baccalaureate program in classics. The chairperson will coordinate day-to-day department activities, operations, scheduling, budgeting, and long-term planning. The successful candidate also will teach courses in the Core and their area of specialization (load is 1-1 for chairs), mentor students, engage in extra-departmental services as needed, and is expected to pursue a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants.
The candidate will have a Ph.D. in Classics or a related discipline such as Ancient History or Near Eastern Studies. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a record of distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship. Experience working or conducting research in the specialty area of the Ancient Near East (Middle East) and/or Africa is desirable. The successful candidate will also have a history of successful service and collaborative leadership in administrative positions at the department, college, or university level. The minimum expected time of service as chair would be two consecutive terms (2021-2024 and 2024-2027). The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
