The Department of Art at the University of Memphis invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Art History beginning August 2020. The Department of Art is a component of the College of Communication and Fine Arts whose commitment to diversity prioritizes that the accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university. We seek a specialist in Greek and Roman art, archaeology or visual culture with a demonstrated research agenda in the study of the ancient Mediterranean world. We encourage applications from those whose work incorporates cross-disciplinary interests such as in the digital humanities, gender and identity studies, or trade and cultural exchange. The ideal candidate will have teaching experience at the university level, an active scholarly record of publications, as well as prior field and/or museum experience. The PhD in Classical art and archaeology or related field is required. Rank is Assistant Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Art history faculty have a combined 3:2 teaching load. Primary responsibilities for this position include World Art, undergraduate/graduate survey classes in Greek and Roman art, and graduate seminars in the applicant’s area of expertise. Departmental and university service responsibilities include committee work, academic advising, MA thesis supervision, online course and curriculum development. We seek an applicant who will work collaboratively with faculty and students in the BA, BFA, MFA, and MA programs in art history, studio arts, graphic design, and art education as well as with the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, the Art Museum of the University of Memphis and across the university.
