Position Description

The Department of Classics and the College of the University of Chicago invite applications from experienced teachers of Greek, Latin and classical studies for a position as Instructional Professor (open rank). The position begins in academic year 2020-21, with a start date of September 1, 2020. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The successful applicant will also hold the position of Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Classics and in that role will work under the direction of the Faculty Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). The initial appointment will be for one year, with review and progression schedule determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.

Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching consists of seven courses across three quarters, reduced to six while serving as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies. During this time, at least three courses will be in Greek language, at all levels of the language. Three additional courses may include non-language courses in the College Core or in the Department of Classics, to be determined in consultation with the Department and College.

As Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies, the successful applicant will enroll new majors and minors and track their progress through the program; advise students on program policy issues and study abroad and grant/fellowship opportunities; liaise with College Advising regarding the academic progress of majors and minors; coordinate dossiers required for BA Honors applications and oversee undergraduate awards; advise students on internships, post-graduate employment, and graduate school applications; and advise the student organizations in Classics. The Assistant DUS will support the faculty DUS and the Department's Language Program Coordinator (LPC) in the planning and organization of the department's co-curricular events; promote the Classics major and minor; evaluate the undergraduate curriculum and develop new curricular initiatives; and prepare the annual report on the undergraduate program. Additional service duties may include the design of course materials and occasional delivery of instruction in courses for which the Lecturer is not the instructor of record. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.


Applicants are required to have at least one year of previous experience teaching Greek at the college or post-secondary level. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required. A Ph.D. in a related field is desirable. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language ability for teaching Greek in a university context. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply.
