The New England Classical Journal (NECJ) invites applications for the position of Book Review Editor, with the appointment to begin in December 2021.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm Eastern Time on Oct. 22, 2021.

A publication of the Classical Association of New England (CANE), NECJ is a biannual, peer-reviewed journal that publishes articles, notes, and reviews on all aspects of classical antiquity. The journal is an Open Access Publication and is available at https://crossworks.holycross.edu/necj/

NECJ aims to publish reviews of books on a wide range of topics related to classical antiquity. Each issue of NECJ contains 4-6 book reviews of 1,200-1,500 words each, and the Book Review Editor is responsible for selecting books for review; finding reviewers; and working with reviewers to help them submit their completed reviews by the deadline. In this position the successful candidate will work with the journal’s Editor, Aaron Seider, and Managing Editor, Ruth Breindel, and will receive an honorarium of $1,000/per year for their work on the journal.

Candidates should be active in the field of Classics and should be invested in publishing book reviews that will be of interest to the members of CANE, which includes students and life-long learners at all levels, primary and secondary school teachers, and college and university professors, as well as to a wider audience of people from any geographic region interested in Greco-Roman antiquity. Candidates should be prepared to work with book review authors on meeting deadlines and requirements of length.

We welcome applications from all groups and from all geographic areas. In order to apply, interested candidates should submit a cover letter and CV to Aaron Seider (aseider@holycross.edu) by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on Oct. 22, 2021. Within the context of NECJ’s movement to Open Access and efforts to reach a greater diversity of readers, your cover letter should describe your interest in the role; any experience relevant to the position; what approaches you might take to diversifying the books that are reviewed and the people who review those books; and how you might support CANE’s mission as Book Review Editor. (Please find CANE’s Mission Statement below.)

Members of NECJ’s editorial team will review applications at the end of October and conduct Zoom interviews with a short-list of candidates shortly thereafter, with the goal of inviting the successful candidate to join our team as Book Review Editor by the end of November.

CANE’s Mission Statement

The Classical Association of New England (CANE) is a membership organization open to scholars, educators, students, and all those with an interest in the languages, history, cultures, and literature of the ancient and medieval Mediterranean world, as well as their reception around the globe and into modern times. CANE is committed to embracing not only the traditional understanding of “Classics” as encompassing the Greek- and Roman-centered narratives of antiquity, but also the perspectives of cultures previously under-represented and under-explored in the past several centuries of classical scholarship. CANE hosts an annual association meeting and a summer institute; awards numerous scholarships and grants; provides a voice to classicists via its website, caneweb.org, and the New England Classical Journal; and acts as a support system for all classical studies programs, at all learning levels, in the six New England states.
